Each plastic factory has its own processes, machinery, controls, suppliers and evaluation tools. Understanding how one works in general allows you to understand why each container is different even though they have the same format. In this blog we will explain how PET and HDPE containers are produced, as well as the most relevant aspects that a plastic factory takes into account for its quality controls.
How operations begin in a plastic factory
Every plastic container begins as resin, small granules of thermoplastic material, which defines the final properties of the container: strength, transparency, chemical compatibility and behavior under heat.
The quality of this is the first factor that distinguishes a serious plastic factory from one that only optimizes for cost. What matters is not whether it is virgin or recycled, but that it is from a controlled origin, certified and with consistent and traceable properties for the intended application.
A serious factory documents the grade, origin and specifications of each resin, virgin or recycled, and discards material out of specification or of unknown origin, which introduces variability that the buyer does not detect until the problem is already in their operation. The risk is not in recycling itself, but in working with material without control or certification.
Production methods in a plastic factory
There are two popular ways to produce containers in a plastic factory, however, choosing one or the other will depend on the material.
- Stretch-blow molding: It is the only method for PET bottles and is based on two stages. The first is to manufacture the preform, a kind of test tube that will be responsible for bringing the container to life. It consists of melting the PET resin and injecting it into a mold; the quality of this will largely determine the quality of the container. The second stage consists of heating the preform to make it malleable. It is introduced into the bottle mold and inflated while a rod stretches it to cover the entire shape. This cycle takes seconds, allowing hundreds of units to be produced per hour with high dimensional consistency.
- Extrusion-blow molding: The method indicated for HDPE containers. It is based on melting the HDPE resin and extruding it continuously as a hollow tube. This falls between the two open halves of the mold and then closes, trapping the lower end and sealing it. Once closed, pressurized air is injected through the container neck, expanding it to completely fill the mold cavity. Contact with the cold walls of the mold causes the material to solidify and thus the final shape of the container is fixed.
Quality control: The differentiator between consistency and variability
The most sophisticated production process does not guarantee quality by itself. To achieve it, a plastic factory must have a certified management system that requires quality controls to be performed at each phase of production. The most relevant ones in container manufacturing are:
- Dimensional control: The height, body diameter, neck and weight of the container are verified frequently during production to avoid inconsistencies and therefore incompatibility with filling lines.
- Hermeticity test: Each batch is subjected to tightness tests to verify that the container does not allow leakage under normal use conditions.
- Weight verification: The weight of the empty container must be controlled to ensure that the material distributed in the wall is consistent with the product specifications.
- Traceability: Each batch has a record that allows tracing the resin used, production parameters, quality test results and destination. This works to detect any problem from its origin and correct it without needing to review all production.
