Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is an efficient and recyclable thermoplastic polymer, making it a sustainable material in the packaging industry.
PET is known for its versatility, durability and resistance; its chemical properties allow it to adapt to different manufacturing techniques. From the 1970s onwards, this material began to be used to package personal care products, cleaning products and food.
Evolution of Polyethylene Terephthalate
In 1930 Carothers and his group of chemists laid the foundation for the development of PET. This change brought not only the improvement of the polymer, but also contributed to the discovery of nylon 66.
By 1950 the Dupont company held the rights to PET and launched its product called Dacron, which is a synthetic fabric. This is how between 1950 and 1960 PET became established as a leading synthetic fiber.
However, it was in 1970 when PET began to be used as a material for water bottles, carbonated beverages and, subsequently, to package creams, makeup, cleaning products and food.
Currently we find this material in practically everything we use in our daily lives, for example: clothing, food containers, bags, electronic components, etc.
Polyethylene Terephthalate for Manufacturing Containers
PET is a material that does not pose a health risk, that is, it is not toxic. It serves as a barrier against moisture, dust and gases, which helps maintain the freshness of food or beverages.

The injection blow molding process is used, which consists of the expansion of the preform through compressed air. With this method, hollow containers (like a bottle) are obtained with a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
